First, I want to express my profound gratitude for all the support you have given Souvenir Children Foundation of Haiti over the years. The work that we do in Haiti would not have been possible without your continued and steadfast backing. Our primary focus is education.
The political instability and the rampant gang activity in Haiti have made the work of the Foundation extremely challenging. In recent years we had to close three schools in and around the capital Port-au-Prince because the environment became too dangerous for the students and the teachers.
Five years ago we started to support a primary school with approximately 50 students in Belle Fountaine which is located in the mountains far from the turmoil of the capital. Currently there are 350 students from kindergarten to Junior high. Every year a new grade is added. The school has an extremely dedicated staff of eight teachers. There are eight teachers at $ 200.00/month, assistant principal $200.00/month , middle school teachers x3 $ 300.00/month and principal at $ 300.00/month.
We would like to build a permanent physical structure for the school in Belle Fontaine. Currently the school operates from a temporary structure made of corrugated tin. A properly built school will cost ~ $ 100,000.00.
In order to meet the needs of the school children and teachers a 15 ,000 gallon cistern was recently built at a cost of $ 10,000 to collect rainwater which is treated.
In 2023 we started an adult alphabetization program. Thirty adults have enrolled and are working very hard to learn to read and write. This group meets in late afternoon and is extremely eager to learn.
Also in 2023 a vocational program was launched. Twenty-five women have enrolled in the sowing program. They are excited to learn.
We started the goat sharing program. It currently has 30 goats shared among 15 families. Mature goats are sold to supplement families’ income.
This year in spite of the challenges we sponsored summer camps in six locations. There was an average of 200 children per site. The camps give the children an opportunity to have fun, learn and be kids. Besides there is a strong emphasis on Christian education.
We have continued the program of educational grants to deserving college students. Due to funding constraints, we have only been able to award $ 2000.00 to three students. Over the years we had sponsored students in Informatics, Engineering, Nursing and Education.
We count on your generous donation. Please continue to support us by visiting our website SCFHaiti.org and click on the Donate now button or by mail us at 18810 Roxanna Woods Drive, Lutz, FL 33548.
With a grateful heart,
Eunice Laborde
